{"id":267,"date":"2008-11-29T02:40:32","date_gmt":"2008-11-29T07:40:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emotionalhealth.us\/blog\/?p=267"},"modified":"2008-11-29T02:44:31","modified_gmt":"2008-11-29T07:44:31","slug":"promoting-emotional-health-in-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emotionalhealth.us\/blog\/promoting-emotional-health-in-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"Promoting Emotional Health in Schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week, a blog at <a title=\"http:\/\/www.teachingexpertise.com\/blog\/promoting-mental-health-schools-3829\" href=\"http:\/\/www.teachingexpertise.com\/blog\/promoting-mental-health-schools-3829\" target=\"_blank\">TeachingExpertise.com<\/a> in London, England reminds us of the need to <em>promote<\/em> mental and emotional health, not simply <em>react<\/em> to mental illness.<\/p>\n<p>The blog&#8217;s author attended an <a title=\"http:\/\/www.teachingexpertise.com\/conferences\" href=\"http:\/\/www.teachingexpertise.com\/conferences\" target=\"_blank\">Optimus Education conference<\/a> on Mental Health in Schools and was impressed with a session delivered by the Samaritans that focused on a program they&#8217;ve developed called <a title=\"http:\/\/www.samaritans.org\/our_services\/work_in_schools\/deal_lesson_plans.aspx\" href=\"http:\/\/www.samaritans.org\/our_services\/work_in_schools\/deal_lesson_plans.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">DEAL<\/a> &#8211; Developing Emotional Health and Learning. (Note: TeachingExpertise.com is the web site of Optimus Education.)<\/p>\n<p>Samaritans has 202 branches across the UK and Ireland. The DEAL program includes a number of lesson plans, fact sheets, and an interactive 6-part DVD.<\/p>\n<p>The DEAL web page includes four 5-15 minute downloadable movies, five .PDF files, and a 3-minute MP3 audio recording about emotional health.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll also find four television spots that take a humorous look at people who are reluctant to ask for help.<\/p>\n<p>Every secondary school in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland received a copy of the DEAL resources as part of its launch in October 2006.\u00a0 For a limited time, a free copy is available to people who will use the materials with young people or schools.
