How do we overcome it?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>April is Emotional Overeating Awareness Month<\/strong>,&#8221; proclaims <a title=\"http:\/\/www.deniselamothe.com\/overcoming.htm\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20090827032710\/http:\/\/www.deniselamothe.com:80\/overcoming.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Denise Lamothe<\/a>, an emotional eating expert, clinical psychologist, speaker, and author.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Emotional eating is eating for reasons other than hunger,&#8221; says Jane Jakubczak, a registered dietitian at the University of Maryland. &#8220;Instead of the physical symptom of hunger initiating the eating, an emotion triggers the eating.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the WebMD network, &#8220;experts estimate that 75% of overeating is caused by emotions.&#8221;\u00a0 In its section about emotional eating, <a title=\"http:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/emotional_eating\/article.htm\" href=\"http:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/emotional_eating\/article.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Medicine.Net <\/a>addresses <em>how we can identify eating triggers and break ourselves of this habit<\/em>.\u00a0 It concludes, &#8220;By identifying what triggers our eating, <strong>we can substitute more appropriate techniques to manage our emotional problems<\/strong> and take food and weight gain out of the equation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Psychology Today offers an &#8220;<a title=\"http:\/\/psychologytoday.psychtests.com\/tests\/eating_disorders_access.html\" href=\"http:\/\/psychologytoday.psychtests.com\/tests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eating Disorders and Emotional Eating Test<\/a>&#8221; (62 questions, 30-35 minutes) that will assess your eating habits to determine whether your relationship to food is healthy or damaging.\u00a0 It will also assess whether you have tendencies towards certain documented eating disorders.<\/p>\n<p>The web site for Prevention Magazine features a section devoted to &#8220;Overcoming Emotional Eating&#8221; that includes over thirty articles.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"http:\/\/geneenroth.com\/index.php\" href=\"http:\/\/geneenroth.com\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Geneen Roth<\/a>, author of <a title=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Breaking-Free-Emotional-Eating-Geneen\/dp\/0452284910\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Breaking-Free-Emotional-Eating-Geneen\/dp\/0452284910\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Breaking Free from Emotional Eating<\/em><\/a>, says &#8220;our relationship to food is a perfect reflection of our relationship to life itself.&#8221;\u00a0 She believes &#8220;the way to transform our relationship with food is to be open, curious and kind with ourselves instead of punishing, impatient and harsh.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Emotional Eating: What is it?
